DIANNE BARNES SAYS
OF ANNIE,
"Annie was not supposed to be mine. I had contacted the breeder about
this litter, but was told all puppies were spoken for, even though they
had just been born. Two months later, I received a call telling me there
was one female left if I still wanted one. I pondered the question for
3 or 4 seconds before giving a resounding YES!
Even as a puppy, I could tell she was different from the other Golden
Retrievers I had owned. She would sit on a rise in the back yard just
gazing straight ahead. Perhaps she was pondering the fate of the world,
the purpose of life or more likely, how to get what she wanted from "Mom".
Annie accumulated the needed minor points for her conformation championship
early and easily. While we waited for the "hard to find" major
shows, she earned her Companion Dog (CD) title in obedience, her Working
Certificate title (WC) and her Junior Hunter title (JH). At age 5 she
completed her bench championship and was officially known as CH Quapaw's
Wingsong Wind Marker, CD, JH, WC, VC.
Annie was so easy to train; if I showed her once what was needed, she
understood. She might not always feel like doing what I asked, but she
knew what to do. This provided moments of frustration as well as laughter,
for myself as well as ringside spectators. From Canada to San Diego, Seattle
to St Louis she thrilled and entertained at shows and trials. In her last
show, Annie placed first in the Veteran Bitch class at the 1995 National
Specialty from a ring full of beautiful Champions.
In May of 1998 she was diagnosed with cancer. Six short weeks later, she
was gone, taking with her a part of myself. If you are considering charitable
donations this year, please think of giving to the AKC Canine Health
Foundation for cancer research."
